[Alsa-xmms-user] snd_mixer_selem_get_id problem

im havin this niggling lil prob here.....
im runnin Debian woody, kernel 2.4.18 (recompiled with sound support and 
nothing else), alsa 0.9,
xmms (latest apt-getable 1.2.7) and the alsa plugin (i presume the latest 
version).

if i run xmms from the cl as a normal user i get:

xmms: simple.c:1065: snd_mixer_selem_get_id: Assertion `elem && id' failed.
Aborted

if i run it as root its runs fine so it must be a permission problem! but 
where??
any ideas are greatly appreciated!
