normally autoconf builds also work in another directory (i.e.
some subdir) - you chdir to some other dir, and run configure 
and make from there, all output will then be put to this 
directory instead of the sourcetree.

not tested yet.

Also I get some errors when trying to build on another machine
with a slightly older glibc version (2.2.5).
