I just subscribed and missed the earlier part of this thread, but this
confuses me - why are you installing aspell from sources? Why don't
you simply use your package manager to do this? `rpm - Uvh` or apt-get
or whatever is appropriate for your distro.

The above will install the aspell binary by default into /usr/local/bin
or whatever; but if your distro already installed its own version of
aspell, there might be a conflict.

what is the output of `which aspell'? It should be /usr/local/bin/aspell
