[AUCTeX] problem activating the latex-symbols-experimental button in too

Although I have activated the toolbar (and it loads without problems), I cannot get the experimental LaTeX symbols button to work. I have added this button in the toolbar preferences, but when I click on it nothing happens (a green checkmark is drawn on the summation symbol, but no symbols are displayed). Following the instructions in tex-bar.el, I have put the folder symbs-pic that I downloaded from Miguel Frasson's site in several places that are in my load path (~/.xemacs/xemacs-packages/, ~/.xemacs/xemacs-packages/etc/, ~/.xemacs/xemacs-packages/lisp/auctex/, etc.), to no avail so far. I know I must be missing something really simple, but I can't figure what!

Cheers,

P.S. Here's my auctex's installation info:
