[AUCTeX] RefTeX and commented \ref's

I would like to embed \ref commands within comments so that I can  
follow the references within emacs without printing a reference when I  
latex a file.  But if I call reftex-view-crossref on the key of a \ref  
within a comment, it complains "Not on a crossref macro argument."  Is  
there some way to work around this?
