Are those valid commands?  When I try to define them using

\newcommand{\"o}{tüddelchen o}
\newcommand{\^o}{dach o}
\newcommand{\~o}{tilde o}

I get the error

ERROR: LaTeX Error: Command \~ already defined.
                    Or name \end... illegal, see p.192 of the manual.
