That looks good, except for one thing: the command
rm -f conf$$*
might remove a bit too much. For example, if $$ = 2, it's equivalent
to "rm -f conf2*", which might remove conf23.o. It's a small point,
but I'd feel a bit better if you uniformly replaced "conf$$" by
"conf$$t" to prevent unexpected matches like that.
