running autoconf when not in $PATH

Today I updated autoconf, rebuilt and installed it.
I don't have install directory in my $PATH.
I tried to run autoconf on a different project and saw this:
creche. ~/gnu/egcs/autoconf/install/bin/autoconf
exec: autom4te: not found
I think it would be convenient if autoconf handled this situation.
For instance, by default it could use a compiled-in path, only falling
back to the user's $PATH if the install tree has been moved.
