loop in 2.53-generated configure on nextstep

i've struck a problem when attempting to install a package on an old
NeXTStep machine.  the package in question has a configure file
(generated by autoconf-2.53) which ends up looping endlessly.

the problem appears to be around the LINENO alternative code: it runs
the two sed commands ok (if slowly :-) and then sources the new file
($as_me.lineno).  it then starts executing from the top again, until
hitting the same point, when it loops again.  it never appears to
break out of this loop.

has anyone seen this before?
any suggestions?
