Sorry folks ...
I just noticed Section "10.4 Built Sources" in the automake-1.7.2 manual
which is very short in the automake-1.6.1 manual. I think I can make my
problem work with the BUILT_SOURCES variable.
I would still (of course) take any feedback from folks who have tried
anthing like this.
