There's no reason to take that attitude. I checked the info
documentation for the installed version I had of autoconf (2.53) and
found nothing.

Thanks. Believe it or not, I had tried the AC_DEFINE method, and failed
to get it working.
Also, that FAQ refers to macros adl_COMPUTE_RELATIVE_PATHS and
adl_COMPUTE_STANDARD_RELATIVE_PATHS that are not present :
