Maybe because you have referenced LIBOBJS in your top leve Makefile.am, automake assumes it should look for them there?
I played with AC_CONFIG_LIBOBJ_DIR and it doesn't seem to have an effect on CVS, which stores its libobjs in lib and builds them as a seperate library which it later links to.
