If nothing else, it may be worth a bug report to the bash_completion
package maintainer, requesting that this particular variable be exported
(even though the bulk of bash completion should not be exported, as it is
designed for interactive shells and should not pollute the environment for
standalone scripts).  On the other hand, my recollection is that upstream
bash_completion is currently seeking a maintainer.
