   - It would be good if the silent-rules API
     (--{disable,enable}-silent-rules, and V=0, V=1) were mentioned
     somewhere.

Totally agree.

I don't have the source code for autoconf here so no patch, but one
could mention setting V=0/V=1 in config.site if one wishes to
permanently flip the variable.
