The time for 'make all' for a large non-recursive Makefile when there is nothing left to do seems like a key useful measurement.
It always annoyed me that classic Automake always recursed but at least it did complete quickly (except for MSYS/MinGW). Without the recursion it would probably have returned twice as fast.
