doing AC_CHECK_TOOL([STRIP], [strip]) in AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE?

This is an old topic which was discussed here:

This was not possible to run AC_CHECK_TOOL from AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE
in Automake 1.5, because with Autoconf 2.13 this would require
config.sub and config.guess.
Any reason why we could not do that today?
