I needed the following patch to get it to work in an non-$srcdir
build.

GNU make 3.81a2 wasn't too happy with the '$$(ACLOCAL_M4)' though.
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `$(ACLOCAL_M4)'. Stop.
I don't know if this is a feature or a bug :-) You may need to put in
topdir/Makefile.in

am--rebuild-aclocal: $(ACLOCAL_M4)
