I don't like the name, I think it should be AC_SUBST_*, not AM_*.
I believe the macro should be defined by Autoconf, perhaps
AC_SUBST_NOTRACE.

I have another solution for the problem of multiline substitutions in my
mind; I hope I'll post a proposal soon.

Please hold back the AM_SUBST_IGNORE until multiline substitutions in
Automake are solved.
