It is possible.
In configure.in, figure out which directory you want to use and set an
automake conditional.
Then in Makefile.am do this:
if USE_SBIN
mybindir = $(sbindir)
else
mybindir = $(libexecdir)
endif
mybin_PROGRAMS = daemon
