When I advanced my proposal of having automake generate GNU make specific
makefiles only, I honestly thought that such a move wasn't going to reduce
portability in any *significant* way -- I thought that all our users would
have been ok with the new extra requirement of having GNU make installed
on the target system.
But then I've read in this same thread the experiences and suggestions of
a good number of real-world users, which disagree with my proposal, giving
(generally) pretty detailed and motivated explanations and rationales about
the cause(s) of their disagreement.
So, now that I've become aware of that disagreement, I simply need to accept
it, take it into account, and adjust my expectations and plans accordinly.
On the bright side, now I see some *real-world* reasons to aim at the
general portability Automakes has always been aiming at, which means that
my motivation to keep that portability alive and sound got a noticeable
boost.
