However, I have switched to an alternate strategy, and I am now stringing 9 AA batteries together to power the STK500. This is working, so far. Any guesses how long these batteries can power this setup? I only need about an hour...
I think this has a good chance of working. I have my trusty STK500 here, powered from a 9V regulated wall-wart, and I measure the current drawn at about 165 mA. Assuming you have set a 5 volt target supply, and that your LEDs are red, you have (5 - 1.7) = 3.3 volts across your two 100 ohm resistors, which is another 66 mA. Alkaline AA cells probably hold at least 2000 mA.hour at this rate of discharge, so my guess is you have eight hours or more of operation on fresh cells.
Graham.
