[avr-chat] Reading data off a smart phone display

I am trying to come up with the cheapest way to get a little bit of
configuration data from a smart phone to an embedded device.

Has anyone experimented with using the phone display for sending
information and a photo transistor or some other sensor for receiving?
If the user places the device flat against the phone screen, ambient
light could be kept at minimum. In my case the amount of data is
small, so simple serial transmission would be sufficient.
