Well, others who know both compilers might perhaps tell a bit more.

Not really.  The cooperation of Atmel and IAR brought some changes in
the design of the AVR to make it more compiler-friendly (Atmel
documented the changes somewhere), but in the end, any compiler can
benefit from this.
