Geda schematic drawing and friends
are in fact turning out quite nicely just now. The only
important restriction right now is the handling of buses, which
for some unknown reason is not impleneted properly is buses.

The standard library seem to include most AVRs as standard 
components.

There is nest list generators for many packages, including
pcb (which is fully free).

For mechanical CAD, there are various, including an 
Autocad-like (sorry, I can't remember its name right now).
