[avr-gcc-list] Putting make intermediate files into a directory

Is there any easy way to modify the sample makefile to place all the .o, .lst, .d, etc files into a subdirectory of my project?  I really don't like anything but the project files and sources in the project directory.

 

I have spent a couple hours going over it and while I can get parts to show up there I can't get a complete build to work.
