Hmm, i'm missing a bit of context here, and about the architecture
description of the butterfly. What does avr-size -A tell about the
size of your resulting ELF file? Perhaps it's too large to fit. Did
you use optimization with avr-gcc? Do you have an idea how large the
original IAR-compiled binary might be?

A simple ISP device is nothing more than a female DB25 connector
on one side, and a 6-pin header on the other end. You could
solder it within a quarter of an hour. At least the free
programmers (like avrdude) do support this kind of devices, no
idea about Atmel's avrprog though.
