I have an atMega64 that I can't write fuses to anymoe with avarice.  I
want to try it with avr studio, but havn't yet.  I wonder if this is the
culprit.  It hasn't been written to that many times, maby 50 or 80...
I recall something about a fuse, that if set, would not let you modify
the fuses anymore.  Could I perhaps somehow turned that on?
