It seems doubtful that either the gcc-help or crossgcc mailing lists
could help a lot, since the issue is specific to avr-gcc. Have you tried
contacting the maintainers?

I had hoped the maintainers of avr-gcc would be reading this list ;)
But I will probably have to contact them directly as you suggest.

Is it reasonable to infer that lack of call frame information would
impact on the ability of ICEs to informatively label related traces of
code generated by avr-gcc? (Compared to, ... ahem, other compilers.)

Im not very familiar with other compilers than gcc for avr, but avr-gcc's lack of callframe information will certainly disable the possibility to watch stack traces in future versions of avr-studio for avr-gcc object files.
