Hi Mitchell,
I have, or had, the same problem as you for some projects I'm working on...
The solution I use is a soic test clip, wired up to the ISP header on
the STK500 works a treat.
Or you can use a soic zif socket wired up to the ISP header...
Takes a little fiddling to set it all up, but once done it's all sweet..
