[avr-gcc-list] Building avr-gdb fails

Hi list,
When i tried to build the tool chain as per
instructions in the avr-libc manual, when building
avr-gdb 

$ ../configure --prefix=$PREFIX --target=avr
$ make
gives out,

configure: error: no termcap library found
make: *** [configure-gdb] Error 1

On the archieves, i got a single thread

As per the aboe thread, 
$rpm -qa | grep term
gives me
terminfo-5.4-59
xtermset-0.5.2-118
indicating that libtermcap.so is not installed. So,
when i installed ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/termcap/
the package, it says 

/usr/bin/install: cannot create regular file
Permission denied.
I donot have root access.

How could I solve the pbm? Any suggestions?
