This bug is not caused by avr-libc, it's a C/C++ compiler bug.
So far, I see
http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=34734
which appears to describe something different though. I can
see the issue here for GCC 4.3.1 but not for GCC 4.2.2.
Before you're going to file it as a GCC bug, please verify
it's still present in the most recent versions. If you're a
WinAVR user, please do at least test the most recent WinAVR
version that has just been released.
