the protocol is an extension, or better: a change, of a proposal made by 
atmel, as described in 
http://www.atmel.com/dyn/resources/prod_documents/doc7592.pdf
. 
in detail, the change was necessary as i had to to support 
programming of multiple boards at the same time.
and yes, there's a bootloader for this, written with avr-g++ and 
the avr-libc.
