You need to install libusb-devel before compiling Avrdude. For a complete
toolchain build procedure see my wiki (wiki.vandenbussche.nl). Wiki text is
Dutch but the content is English (sort of...)
I use both STK-500 and AvrISPmkII (as sold by Elektor here in NL)
