since avrdude 5.6 the Blockmode is back in avr910 protocoll (was moved to avr109 only in an early 5.x Version). If you have a programmer supporting blockmode, speedup may be from that.

using an AVR-910 compatible programmer attached to the USB interface on my Linux Notebook. Since my last Linux upgrade, programming became 10x faster.
That was a very nice surprise.

Did you change something related in your program or do you think that
changes in the OS (Ubuntu Linux) are the cause of that improvement?

I am asking because I use USB2Serial interfaces in my own hardware and I
am interested to learn how to speed things up.
