With the patch to remove the -lintl from h/powerpc-macosx.defs LIBS line
./configure --enable-locbfd --disable-statsysbfd --disable-nls
make
./bin/gcl
(setq a 3)
(system::save-system "test")
./test
a
yields 3


successfully builds and saves on MAC OSX PPC
successfully builds and saves on FreeBSD
successfully builds and saves on Debian
