Technically, Axiom doesn't depend on "a separately released version of gcl" since, as I read it a "dependency" implies that someone needs to do an apt-get for gcl and have the dependency listed in the rpm. We don't need to do this since Gold, at least, cannot use an external gcl. If Camm and Ondrej want to use GCL-2.6.7 they only need to set the GCLVERSION variable in the top level makefile or to type: make GCLVERSION=gcl-2.6.7 and it should build using that version.
Yes, but generally it is a good philosophy to let each particular distribution to handle all external programs (be it Debian, Ubuntu, Gentoo, Suse or Mac OS X). Because otherwise axiom is just duplicating the job that the distribution should do. Ondrej
