Yes, that's what I had in mind. Nope, I don't know projects that do that.
There's stuff on the Internet (e.g.,

but I don't know what it's worth. Karl once wrote he had something for BibTeX
and Texinfo, but that's ancient and probably too much efforts
(http://www.mail-archive.com/address@hidden/msg00097.html).
