Hi Volker,
I don't know anything about psfrag or chemscheme, but I believe that
your problem comes from the fact that the Cairo export does not export
text as text (string) but it converts it into curves. Therefore there is
no way for the program you use to find the text in the file - it is just
a path, text.
For this reason I think you would have to stick to the piddle export. It
is good for me to know that someone uses it, because I was thinking
about removing it completely and replace it with cairo. The main
disadvantage of piddle is that it cannot export unicode strings, just
ascii (and maybe latin-1, I am not sure now). This is something cairo
handles without problem. The conversion to curves also ensures that
anyone will display the image exactly the same, regardless of him having
the proper fonts installed. It can however cause trouble when you want
to extract or edit the text afterwards :(
I hope my answer would be of some help, at least in understanding the
problem.

        Best regards

                Beda
