The first reason was that I never completed the command. This was
before marks, so I could only make it work in the region anyway.
The second reason was that I just didn't find the need. I forgot about
it and used Dired instead. Besides, Dired is pretty good for doing
stuff on files.

I don't get this. Why would you use `M-& !'?
