Error message: a2ps: cannot find file `level1.ppd': No such file or directory

I have just built and installed a2ps-4.12.

When I run it, the only response I ever get (even to --version or --help)
is:
        a2ps: cannot find file `level1.ppd': No such file or directory

My system is (uname -a):
        SunOS chum 5.7 Generic_106541-17 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-4

The item that I suspect is causing the problem is that our sys admins won't
do software installs and won't give us root permission to do it ourselves.
They have given us an area to install software, but it's not anything like a
standard placement.  So, I've been doing installs there.  

Any help or ideas would be appreciated.
