It is linux and i think you are right - the change happened between versions of 
apl with the change of use of readline -> curses - 

the problem is that i use the 'bottom' of the xterm for displaying data of the 
system and then control the cursor myself   - i don't have real control on the 
size of xterm used - 

i clear the xterm (/usr/bin/clear) myself before starting apl
