Note that once CTRL-R is hit, to clear or change the substring being searched for one must erase the current line and return the cursor to the beginning input column (eg., CTRL-A CTRL-K or manually delete all input). Then re-enter a substring and hit CTRL-R to search a different substring). This will also move the current history pointer within the history list; I considered binding CTRL-space to 'clear' the history substring search at any point and reset history to the latest entry; if you think that might be good I can work on adding that back in.

Perhaps others can try this and see if it improves their workflow, and it could be improved.
