Well, no.  preview-latex runs dvipng, finds that your file uses some
GhostScript specials, and then runs dvips and GhostScript to generate
just those previews which rely on GhostScript.

The one thing that would be worth improving is that dvips is run on
the entire DVI file (Ghostscript is then just used on the interesting
parts of the PostScript file, however).

I am not sure whether there are maximum command line lengths or
similar involved on different operating systems (we already had
complaints about exceeded command lengths on some Ghostscript command
lines for some Windows versions, and this could be much more severe
when passing a long page list on the command line to dvips).

So this is not something that is going to be changed before the next
release.

Here is a clue: only those files that have a file name of pr1-1.png or
similar will have been generated by Dvips/Ghostscript.  All the rest
in the temporary directory will be from Dvipng.
