I repeat: please don't reply to me in private Email. I don't use
Windows, and I am not the only developer of AUCTeX. Please reply to
the bug reporting list. Only that way can you hope to get more
competent help than what I, not a user of Windows, can provide.

preview-latex does not touch any of Ghostscript's search paths. It is
not responsible for hosing them. Whether you do this by old settings
to system variables, or by old registry entries, or old configuration
files, I have no idea. I don't use Windows. Maybe somebody else on
the list has an idea where the search paths on Windows might be set.

Until
pdf2dsc something.pdf something.dsc
can be run on some PDF file with success, preview-latex will not be
able to work in PDF mode.

Then _where_ does your Ghostscript get the idea to look at c:/gs/...?
You have to figure that out. It is not preview-latex that is telling
this to Ghostscript. Maybe somebody else who actually uses Windows
has an idea, but short of that, you are out on your own.

Until pdf2dsc starts working properly when called from the command
line, preview-latex will not be able to work.

It makes the assumption that pdf2dsc is in the path and works. This
is not the case here, and it seems quite likely that this is because
of hosed path settings.
