[Bug-AUCTeX] 11.82; preview-latex on ms-wxp?

hi there!

trying out the preview-latex of auctex-11-82 on ms-wxp with a freshly
built emacs-21-4-1 i get "LaTeX: preview-image-type setting 'png
unsupported by this Emacs". also pnm images do not work. 

info section "2.7 Installation under MS Windows" is telling me "all
current Emacs/XEmacs versions capable of running preview-latex by now
can be compiled to support PNG images."

so 

* is emacs on ms-wxp "capable of running preview-latex"? 

* if so, how "can (emacs) be compiled to support PNG images"? 

* if no png support is available, what would work?
