And I _did_ tell you to use address@hidden instead and explained
why.  So I am manually diverting this from the auc-tex list at
Sunsite, and apologize that people will not see the original posting
(if I moderated it through, it would appear on auctex instead of
bug-auctex, and replies would again go to Sunsite).

Your version of AUCTeX is completely outdated: 11.55 was released on
2005-02-04, 11.81 was released on 2005-09-25, about a year ago.  By
now we habe 11.83 and will soon have 11.84.

You are likely using the Sumo tarball from XEmacs.  This contains an
outdated and partly broken version of AUCTeX.  There is no active
AUCTeX maintainer among XEmacs developers at the moment, so it is not
likely that they'll even fix the wrong mailing list addresses.

Please uninstall AUCTeX via the package manager, then install a new
version from
<URL:ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/auctex/auctex-11.83-pkg.tar.gz>.  This
is a perfectly viable and working XEmacs package, but since it was not
created using XEmacs' development tools, it will not get accepted into
XEmacs by the XEmacs development team.  Which is actually a pity,
since AUCTeX-11.83 also comes with preview-latex integrated.

If your problems with the documentation not matching the code persist
with this package, please report back to this list.  If not, you might
consider suggesting to the XEmacs developers that they change the
documentation for the outdated variant of AUCTeX they choose to
distribute.

There is really nothing that we can do upstream about that.
