I know this is buggy LaTeX input and it results in an error message. But should it cause an infinite loop in AUCTeX? I didn't in 11.82 which was the one I was able to test against.
% \textsf{a line of text here and then a blank line % % and then the text continues}is not valid LaTeX either as \textXX commands don't allow \par tokens but this doesn't cause similar problems.
I would like to point out that I did not reverse engineer this: I just happen to make typos quite frequently.
