What do you mean with it being lost?  What's the output of `C-h v
TeX-master <RET>' after you load such a file?

Maybe it's another version of XEmacs?  Which versions of XEmacs are you
using on the two machines?

I've checked it with XEmacs 21.4.22 here and that picks up the value of
the file variable just fine.
