I've installed Tex Live 2013 using `install-tl' and keep it up-to-date
using `tlmgr', so it's not the vanilla 2013 release anymore.

Not sure if that would help.  But as far as I can see, there are two
options.  Either the `preview-gs-file' file is indeed corrupt and gs'
complaints are justified, or the file is correct and the culprit is your
ghostscript version.

`preview-gs-file' is the file thesis.prv/tmp587289al/preview.ps from the
error message in one of your previous messages.  Unfortunately, that
gets deleted during the processing, so you will need to comment out some

  (preview-delete-file preview-ps-file)

forms to prevent that.

If you can post that file, I can try if the gs command on it works here.
If so, then your ghostscript is the culprit.  If not, then we'll have to
check everything that's involved in its creation.

(If you can compile your document also with pdflatex, you might want to
try `TeX-PDF-mode'.  With that, preview also works differently and maybe
works around the problem.)
