I followed your detailed instruction but the problem was still there. So  there 
had to be something irregular interfering with AUCTeX. I then realized that I 
had installed an emacs-snapshot and the problems had begun with the latest 
update. So I removed the emacs-snapshot from my system and installed the stable 
version of emacs 24. I then had to remove lots of "require"-lines in my 
".emacs" but now everything seems to work in accordance with your descriptions 
and my expectations :-)
